Hartwood's Respite Program celebrated its 30th anniversary of providing services to the Northern Virginia community in May, and in October the Belle View group homes celebrated the 25th anniversary of providing full time, comprehensive community residential supports for persons with intellectual disabilities.
One of the greatest challenges we face in 2011 and beyond is to keep pace with the growing needs of the folks we support in the community. As with any group, as our program participants age, needs for support grow. In our case the progression of disabilities and aging can be, and often is, accelerated.
We have been modifying homes to eliminate physical barriers and purchasing equipment to facilitate mobility, communication, and safety. All of which greatly contribute to quality of life, but all also come with significant costs.
